David Ortiz is progressing in the right direction.

The Boston Red Sox legend "continues to recuperate" in Massachusetts General Hospital's intensive care unit under the watch of trauma surgeon Dr. David King, Ortiz's wife, Tiffany, said in a statement Wednesday.

“Yesterday and this morning, David was able to sit up as well as take some steps," Tiffany said. "His condition is guarded and he will remain in the ICU for the coming days, but he is making good progress towards recovery.

“My family and I again want to thank everyone for their endless love and well wishes, and still ask for privacy while David continues to heal."

Ortiz was shot in the lower back Sunday in the Dominican Republic and already has had two surgeries to address liver and intestine damage. He was transported to Boston from the Dominican on Monday night and reportedly was able to speak with loved ones Tuesday.

Ortiz's shooting is being treated as an attempted murder and Dominican police reportedly have apprehended two suspects in the ongoing investigation.
