Dombrowski won't rule out second base insurance if Pedroia isn't healthy

Dustin Pedroia has already been announced as the Red Sox leadoff hitter on Opening Day for the 2019 season... if he's healthy.

Still, that hasn't stopped the Red Sox from coming up with contingency plans in case Pedroia isn't ready to go next year. After all, Pedroia only played in three games this past season thanks to persistent issues with his left knee.

"There's a lot of second basemen who are out there," said Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski at the GM meetings, per MassLive. "Our first pulse there will be seeing how Dustin does. We don't have a timeframe on that exactly. We're still working on that. We'll get a pulse of it relatively soon to see what we do for the winter time."

This past season, the Sox added both Ian Kinsler and Brandon Phillips as depth options at second base to back up Eduardo Nunez.

Dombrowski says both Pedroia and Steven Wright will meet with doctors this month to get a clearer idea of their status heading into the 2019 season as both players recover from knee injuries.
