Dustin Pedroia: If knee can't heal, ‘I don't have one regret'

Since the start of the 2018 MLB season, Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has played just nine games. He has dealt with a difficult and persistent knee injury, and he has struggled to return from that. While he is going to keep pushing, it has proven difficult for him to come back.

Pedroia spoke frankly about the injury in a recent interview and acknowledged that he may not be able to play again. But if he can't suit up, he will be at peace with that.

"If my knee can’t do it and I don’t play again, I don’t have one regret," Pedroia said to Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe. “I never took one play off in my life. It’s unfortunate that I got hurt. But you can’t control that.”

Pedroia really shouldn't have any regrets, either. He has been a part of three different World Series-winning teams, holds a .299 career batting average with 140 homers and 725 RBIs, and took home the AL MVP after the 2008 season. He was one of the better second basemen in baseball for a long time. He just happened to suffer an injury that capsized the final years of his career.

Pedroia is continuing to attempt a comeback and he is still trying to find the right knee brace to help him achieve this goal. Until he returns to the field, the Red Sox will roll with the duo of Michael Chavis and Tzu-Wei Lin at second base, at least until Brock Holt and Eduardo Nunez (both also on the IL) return to action.
