Dustin Pedroia makes his presence felt
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Unlike Wednesday, Thursday was a great day for baseball at JetBlue Park.
The sun was shining and the temperature hovered right around 75 degrees, making up for the gloomy rain yesterday. The Red Sox had their normal day of workouts, taking part in everything from batting practice to fielding and mobility drills. The star of BP? Dustin Pedroia, who arrived for his first day of camp.
Here’s a breakdown of everything that went on. . .
As expected, second baseman Dustin Pedroia reported to camp ahead of the official Feb. 18 full squad report date. Other than that, it was the regular cast of characters.
WHAT WAS SAID?
David Price on why he changed his number from 24 to 10: “I’ma let you guys figure it out. It's not that tough, I feel like you can get it. Somebody will get it and everybody's gonna be like, 'Oh, ok, wow.' " It later was revealed Price changed it in honor of his son, Xavier.
Steve Pearce on the Super Bowl: “It was a grind. It was tough to watch but I’m glad we (the Patriots) got the win.”
Mookie Betts on the slow free agent market: “It’s something that’s definitely not good. Especially with those guys (Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Craig Kimbrel), but there’s a bunch of guys that haven’t signed and like I said, I don’t want to speak on anyone’s free agency and how they’re handling it, but I think it’s definitely not good that -- you could probably make an All-Star team with the free agents that are out there."
Alex Cora on Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez: “It’s funny because if you guys are around the cage or during BP, these two are probably the worst hitters ever the way they talk. I mean, it’s unreal how they complain about their swings … they’re so insecure … I say ‘man, you guys are complaining hitting .340, imagine you guys hit .237 like I did?' ”
WHAT WAS DONE?
Outdoor batting practice, fielding drills, mobility drills, batting cages, you name it. David Price, Mookie Betts, and Alex Cora each spoke to the media.
David Price keeping the reasoning behind his number change a mystery, the Red Sox “turning the page” after a championship season, and the Mookie Betts/J.D. Martinez relationship were all solid topics brought up in Thursday’s availability. There also was more bullpen talk, of course, and that likely won’t end any time soon.
