Eduardo Rodriguez exits early with ankle sprain

Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez suffered a sprained right ankle and had to leave the game after a collision at first base with the Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the sixth inning on Saturday.

Rodriguez was covering first on Gurriel's ground ball to Blake Swihart - playing first in place of Mitch Moreland. Swihart ranged to his left, bobbled the ball and his toss was a little behind Rodriguez, who tripped over a sliding Gurriel as both arrived at the bag. Gurriel was safe and both players stayed down on the ground for a few moments.

Rodriguez, who had been pitching a shutout for 5 1/3 innings, slowly walked back to the mound with Red Sox training staff before leaving the game. The Red Sox announced shortly afterward that he had a right ankle sprain and X-rays were negative.

"I was just talking to [head trainer Brad Pearson], it looks bad," Cora told reporters after the game, per NESN. "We'll see, we'll wait, but yeah, it looks bad. He’s moving around, which is encouraging, but obviously we’ve got to go through the tests and all that and see what happens."

Rodriguez allowed four hits and struck out five with no walks. He threw 67 pitches. Heath Hembree replaced him with the Red Sox leading, 1-0.

Rodriguez is 11-3 with a 3.62 ERA and hadn't allowed a run in his previous two starts. With the All-Star break after Sunday, his next scheduled start isn't for another 10 days.
