Jason Varitek spent nine seasons as David Ortiz's teammate on the Boston Red Sox, and the two developed quite a friendship.

That bond was evident Monday when Varitek, who works for the Sox, fought back tears while talking to reporters about Sunday night's shooting involving Ortiz in the Dominican Republic.

Watch Varitek's emotional reaction in the video below:

“I didn’t sleep very well last night,” Varitek also said. “I don’t think anybody did that knew. We spent a lot of time trying to figure out what was going on. Still don’t know that much besides what everybody’s seen and heard.”

Ortiz was shot in the back Sunday night in Santo Domingo and underwent a six-hour surgery.

A doctor confirmed he suffered damage to his liver and small and large intestines. Ortiz is expected to make a full recovery, and he soon will be transported from the Dominican Republic to Boston, where his recovery will continue at Massachusetts General Hospital.

A suspect in the shooting has been arrested, according to police.
