John Henry, Red Sox announce Chaim Bloom hire with ringing endorsement

The Boston Red Sox officially have a new head of baseball operations less than a year after winning the World Series.

The Red Sox announced their hiring of Chaim Bloom as the club's "Chief Baseball Officer" on Monday in a statement ahead of Bloom's 1:30 p.m. ET introductory press conference.

In the statement, Boston's top executives offered a very strong endorsement of the 36-year-old Yale graduate, who previously served as the Tampa Bay Rays' vice president of baseball operations.

"We believe Chaim is exactly the right person to lead the Boston Red Sox baseball operation based on a number of attributes we sought in this process,” Red Sox principal owner John Henry said in the statement, adding that Bloom was the first candidate the team interviewed for the job.

" ... He made a strong impression on all of us and validated our initial research that he was the one to lead our baseball operation."

Bloom takes over for ex-president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, who was fired in early September just 10 months after helping Boston win the 2018 World Series.

Dombrowski left the Red Sox' farm system bare, though, and in hiring a candidate like Bloom -- who helped the Rays find success with a fraction of Boston's payroll -- it's clear the team's ownership wants a change in philosophy.

"Chaim’s rise from intern with the Rays in 2005 to Senior Vice President, Baseball Operations speaks to his leadership, intelligence and work ethic,” Red Sox chairman Tom Werner added in Monday's statement.

“He possesses the essential qualities to establish a sustainable baseball operation throughout the organization with an emphasis on long-term success at the major league level."

Translation: The Red Sox are counting on Bloom to establish a more sustainable model of success than his predecessor.
