Report: Red Sox among teams in on Scherzer

The Boston Red Sox reportedly are in the mix for the biggest name on the trade market ahead of Friday's deadline.

According to Jayson Stark of The Athletic, the Red Sox are one of eight teams in on Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer. Also involved are the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros and New York Mets.

Red Sox trade deadline targets: Starting pitchers

Ate age 37, Scherzer remains one of the top pitchers in MLB. The three-time Cy Young award winner is 7-4 with a 2.83 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 18 starts (105 innings) this season.

If the Red Sox do work out a deal for Scherzer, it almost certainly will cost them muliple top prospects. That price might be too steep with Scherzer set to be a free agent after this season. Still, it's no surprise Chaim Bloom and Co. are doing their due diligence on the top pitcher available ahead of Friday's trade deadline.

A trade to the Dodgers, Giants or Padres seems like the most likely scenario. The right-hander reportedly prefers to join a West Coast club if dealt and will exercise his no-trade rights to avoid going to the Mets.

Scherzer isn't the only household name linked to Boston this week. The Red Sox reportedly also are in preliminary discussions with the Chicago Cubs on a potential Anthony Rizzo trade.
