Report: Red Sox interested in signing Freddie Freeman in MLB free agency

The Boston Red Sox have been pretty quiet in MLB free agency since the lockout ended last week, but that could change in a major way.

The Red Sox are the latest team to enter the Freddie Freeman sweepstakes, according to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman. Boston isn't the only American League East team pursuing the Atlanta Braves first baseman -- the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays have shown interest as well.

Freeman is one of the top free agents still available and would provide a huge boost to the Red Sox lineup if they can land him.

He batted .300 with 31 home runs, 83 RBI, 120 runs scored, 180 hits and a .393 on-base percentage in 159 games for the Braves last season. He batted .311 with five homers and 11 RBI in the postseason and helped Atlanta win its first World Series title since 1995. The Braves eliminated the Houston Astros in six games.

Freeman made his MLB debut in 2010 and he's played for the Braves his entire career. He's been a reliable hitter for a long time with eight seasons of 20-plus homers.

The only issue with Freeman is he'll be 33 years old in September. He's not a young player and could be in the final stages of his prime. A long-term deal for Freeman wouldn't make a ton of sense. But if the Red Sox could get him on a shorter term, big-money contract, that would be great for Boston.

The Red Sox need some more power in their lineup, especially if they don't re-sign Kyle Schwarber.
