The Yankees weren't the only American League East team to send scouts to Friday night's Blue Jays-Tigers matchup in Detroit.
The Red Sox sent their top advisor to watch trade candidate Marcus Stroman take the mound for Toronto, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
#RedSox have top advisor Frank Wren in Detroit for Marcus Stroman's start against the #Tigers. Detroit's Shane Greene is another possibility for Boston. The Red Sox also had a top scout watching Bumgarner-Syndergaard last night. @MLB @MLBNetwork— Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) July 19, 2019
Stroman, who entered Friday's game with a 5-10 record and 3.25 ERA on the year, is one of the top pitchers rumored to be available with the July 31 trade deadline approaching.
The Red Sox acquiring Stroman seems improbable, however, as president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said they may stand pat following their deal for starter Andrew Cashner. Plus, Boston likely doesn't have the prospects to put together an attractive trade package for the 28-year-old right-hander.
As Morosi notes, there's a chance the Red Sox' advisor is in Detroit for a chance to see Tigers closer Shane Greene in action. The 30-year-old has been one of the best relievers in the game this season and would provide a major boost to a Boston bullpen that has struggled mightily.
While pitching undoubtedly remains the priority, don't rule out the Red Sox trading for a right-handed hitter. White Sox slugger Jose Abreu is one name to keep an eye on with the deadline only 12 days away.
