The Boston Red Sox have a few balls in the air this offseason. But they're not juggling in a vacuum.
As the Red Sox decide what moves to make (Should they add a bullpen arm? Trade one of their catchers?) and what moves not to make (Would they really trade Rick Porcello or Xander Bogaerts?), they'll keep a keen eye on their American League rivals.
Teams like the New York Yankees, Houston Astros and Cleveland Indians could look to make big splashes this offseason to vault into title contention and prevent a Red Sox World Series repeat.
So, what are those teams up to at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Las Vegas? Here's a look at the latest news and updates for each team entering Day 3.
YANKEES
-- Manny Machado is this year's free agent crown jewel, and New York is expected to meet with the All-Star shortstop "soon," the New York Post's Kristie Ackert reported Tuesday. The Yankees will face steep competition from the Philadelphia Phillies, but after Brian Cashman all but ruled out Bryce Harper, it sounds like Machado is their marquee man.
-- The Bronx Bombers are open to trading young third baseman Miguel Andujar, per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. Andujar could play a role a three-team blockbuster with the Miami Marlins and New York Mets that would send catcher J.T. Realmuto to Queens.
Boston Red Sox
There's also a juicy rumor out there that Mets ace Noah Syndergaard could go to the Yankees as part of that deal.
-- With Zach Britton and David Robertson hitting free agency, the Yanks are in the market for a reliever. They appear to have interest in right-hander Adam Ottavino, who reportedly also is on the Red Sox's list.
ASTROS
-- While certainly not a front-runner, Houston appears to at least have a shot at Harper in free agency.
-- After missing out on Nathan Eovaldi, the Astros are hunting for a starting pitcher and have been engaged with both J.A. Happ and Lance Lynn, per MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
-- Even if they don't land Harper, the Astros likely will pursue another bat. They've been tied to slugger Nelson Cruz and reportedly could go after Realmuto if the Mets/Yankees/Marlins trade falls through.
INDIANS
-- The Indians actually could play big roles as sellers. Pitchers Corey Kluber and Trevor Bauer reportedly are on the trade block, and the club also has listened to offers for infielder Edwin Encarnacion and utility man Yandy Diaz, per Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com.
-- Relievers Andrew Miller and Cody Allen both are free agents, and Cleveland will have to decide whether to re-sign their two bullpen studs.
