Orioles troll Red Sox on Twitter by reopening old Boston wounds

Red Sox

The stars appeared to align for the Boston Red Sox this week -- unless you're aware of their history with the Baltimore Orioles.

Locked in a four-team race for two American League Wild Card spots, the Red Sox shockingly lost two of three to the lowly Orioles at Camden Yards this week, including a 6-2 defeat Thursday that dropped them into a tie with the Seattle Mariners for the second Wild Card slot.

That's a pretty bad look for Boston against a Baltimore team with the second-worst record in baseball, and the Orioles were happy to revel in the Red Sox' shortcomings on Twitter after Thursday night's upset.

But the O's didn't stop there. The team also changed its Twitter bio avatar to a headshot of former infielder Robert Andino.

What does a light-hitting second baseman who spent just four seasons in Baltimore have to do with any of this?

Well, almost 10 years ago to the day, it was Andino whose line drive to left field fell just in front of Carl Crawford, resulting in a walk-off win for the Orioles in their season finale against the Red Sox.

That victory eliminated Boston from the postseason, completing an epic collapse in which the Red Sox dropped 20 of their last 27 games and later fired manager Terry Francona that winter.

The 2021 Red Sox are in danger of suffering a similar fate: They've lost five of their last six and need to win their final regular-season series against the Washington Nationals to avoid being caught by the Mariners (tied with Boston) and Toronto Blue Jays (one game back) for the final Wild Card spot.

Of course, the Orioles aren't going anywhere, but they clearly enjoy playing spoiler -- especially at Boston's expense.
