Pedro Martinez slams ump Angel Hernandez after three overturned calls

It would be safe to say that Angel Hernandez had a bad night. Or maybe not. We'll have to go to replay to find out.

Hernandez was stationed at first base in Game 3, a 16-1 Sox victory. He had four, yes four, calls challenged last night. Three of them were overturned, all within a span of three innings. Two were bang-bang plays where the first baseman stretched...so, eh, he'll get the benefit of the doubt on those. The third was pretty egregious.

Red Sox legend and Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez, who was on the TBS pre- and postgame show, did not mince words with the longtime umpire. “Angel was horrible,” Martinez said after the game. “Don’t get me going on Angel now. Major League Baseball needs to do something about Angel. It doesn’t matter how many times he sues Major League Baseball. He’s as bad as there is.”

Martinez is referencing a case from last year where Hernandez sued the MLB claiming he was not promoted to crew chief and lacked World Series assignments because of race. Hernandez was born in Cuba.

Martinez isn't the only one with Hernandez beef. Sox' second baseman Ian Kinsler famously said "[Hernandez] needs to re-evaluate his career choice" because he's "messing with baseball games" after a game last season where Kinsler was ejected by Hernandez for arguing balls-and-strikes. Kinsler went on to say "I'm suprised at how bad an umpire he is."

Hernandez will be stationed behind home plate tonight for Game 4. Boston looks to clinch the series and a trip to the ALCS while the Yankees hope to force Game 5 at Fenway.
