Red Sox announce rosters for Sunday’s Alumni Game

Just like when he was with the Red Sox, Lou Merloni won’t have to face Pedro Martinez - because he’ll be his teammate.

The Sox announced the roster for their first Alumni Game in 25 years, which takes place Sunday morning at 10:30 before the 1:05 p.m. game against the Atlanta Braves at Fenway.

Red Sox Hall of Famers Luis Tiant and Dwight Evans are the managers of the teams of ex-Sox who’ll play a three-inning game. Team Evans features Baseball Hall of Famers Martinez and Wade Boggs, and of course, NBC Sports Boston’s own Merloni.

Team Tiant has two of the most recent Red Sox Hall of Fame inductees, Mike Lowell and Derek Lowe, who, along with Kevin Youkilis and the late Buck Freeman, were inducted Thursday night and will be honored at a pregame ceremony tonight.

Gregory Polanco honors Red Sox legend David Ortiz with awesome custom cleats

Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz has received many prayers, well-wishes and messages of support from athletes in all different sports since he was shot in the Dominican Republic on June 9, and one Major League Baseball player took the time to honor Big Papi with special cleats.

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco, who like Ortiz was born in the Dominican Republic, recently paid tribute to Ortiz with custom cleats.

Ortiz was shot in the back in Santo Domingo on June 9 and has undergone two surgeries, one in the Dominican Republic and one at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was still recovering at MGH as of late last week, and his wife, Tiffany, has given multiple statements on his condition since he returned to Boston.

Police are still investigating the shooting and any potential motives of the suspects involved.

Tonight's lineups: Boston Red Sox vs. Minnesota Twins

After a four-game sweep of the 50-loss Baltimore Orioles, the Red Sox will be tested with a series in Minnesota against the 47-win Twins.

Boston is just 16-23 against teams above .500, and the Twins currently lead the AL Central by 10 games. As a team, Minnesota leads the major leagues in batting average and home runs and has won seven of their last 10.
