Red Sox become 33rd Boston team to reach ‘Final Four' since 2001

So the Red Sox are in the ALCS . . . the 'Final Four' of baseball, as it were.

And if it seems like familiar territory, it is.

Since 2001, Boston teams have reached their sport's 'Final Four' no fewer than 33 times, an average of 1.8 per calendar year. It's the Sox' sixth trip there, and only twice -- 2003 and 2008 -- did they fail to follow that up with a World Series victory.

Here's the team-by-team breakdown. listed alphabetically:

BRUINS: Two appearances (2011 and 2013), with both resulting in advacement to the Stanley Cup Finals. They've won one championship (2011).

CELTICS: Six appearances (2002, '08, '10, '12, '17 and '18) and two trips to the NBA Finals (2008 and '10), with one championship (2008).

PATRIOTS: 12 appearances (2001, '03, '04, '06, '07, '11, '12, '13, '14, '15, '16 and '17) and eight trips to the Super Bowl (2001, '03, '04, '07, '11, '14, '16 and '17), with five championships (2001, '03, '04, '14 and '16).

RED SOX: Six appearances (2003, '04, '07, '08, '13 and '18) and three trips -- so far -- to the World Series ('04, '07 and '13), with championships in each World Series trips.

REVS: Seven appearances (2002, '03, '04, '05, '06, '07 and 2014), and five trips to the MLS Cup (2002, '05, '06, '07 and '14), with no championships.
