Red Sox DFA Franchy Cordero, reinstate Phillips Valdez

The Boston Red Sox announced Thursday they have designated Franchy Cordero for assignment.

Cordero, acquired as part of last offseason's trade that sent Andrew Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals, played only 48 games with the big-league club in 2021. The 27-year-old outfielder was demoted to Triple-A Worcester in May and hit just .189 with one home run and nine RBI with Boston.

As a corresponding move, the Red Sox reinstated right-handed reliever Phillips Valdez from the COVID-related injured list.

Valdez posted a 5.85 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 28 appearances for the Red Sox this season.

The Red Sox are preparing for a do-or-die Game 6 showdown with the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series. First pitch is set for 8:08 p.m. ET Friday night at Minute Maid Park.
