Red Sox draft pick Marcelo Mayer is fired up about joining Boston

The Boston Red Sox got lucky Sunday night when high school shortstop Marcelo Mayer fell to the No. 4 pick in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

The Red Sox were happy to take Mayer at that spot, and Boston fans were pretty excited about the outcome.

It turns out Mayer is fired up, too.

Here's his reaction on Instagram from Sunday night after being drafted by the Red Sox:

Mayer hit hit .392 with 14 homers and 45 RBI in 34 games for East Lake High School (Chula Vista, Calif.) during the 2021 season.

He was rated as the top prospect in most player rankings and mock drafts entering Sunday's first round.

The Pittsburgh Pirates held the No. 1 pick and somewhat surprisingly took Louisville catcher Henry Davis. When the top pitcher -- Vanderbilt's Jack Leiter -- went to the Texas Rangers with the No. 2 pick, the Red Sox had a pretty easy choice with Mayer available at No. 4 overall.
