Unexpected tragedy descended on the Boston Red Sox for the second time in a week.

The Red Sox confirmed in a statement Wednesday afternoon that Romell Jordan, the adopted brother of catcher Blake Swihart, has passed away. He was 23.

Jordan had a tumultuous childhood and lived in multiple states with different family members, according to a 2012 feature in the Albuquerque Journal. While Jordan was in high school and living in New Mexico, Swihart's sister, Kacie, suggested they adopt him.

Jordan went on to play running back at the University of New Mexico from 2014 to 2017, appearing in 26 games over three seasons and tallying 551 rushing yards on 105 attempts with five touchdowns. Swihart visited New Mexico during Jordan's senior year to watch him play.

Swihart was scratched from Boston's spring training game against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, while his sister and members of the New Mexico community mourned Jordan's death.
