Red Sox place Michael Chavis on IL, call up Marco Hernández, Travis Lakins

It appears the same shoulder Michael Chavis dips as he runs to first base is not at 100 percent.

Ahead of their three-game series against the Cleveland Indians, the Red Sox made a flurry of roster moves, including placing Chavis on the 10-day injured list with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder. The injury may explain Chavis' August slump — he's recorded just five hits in 11 games. Even with the quiet month, Chavis has hit 18 home runs, second-most among American League rookies.

The Red Sox will send Ryan Weber back down to Triple-A Pawtucket. Weber last pitched on Sunday against the Angels, when he allowed one earned run in as many innings. He also pitched the game before that, throwing two scoreless innings in relief. On the season, Weber has a 4.35 ERA in the majors, fitting right in with the rest of Boston's bullpen.

To replace Chavis and Weber, the Red Sox recalled infielder Marco Hernández and pitcher Travis Lakins from Pawtucket. Hernández has made strong contributions to the Red Sox's elite offense this year, hitting .333 and providing clutch hits. Without Chavis, expect Hernández and Brock Holt to assume second baseman duties.

Lakins has been used sparingly with the big-league club, having pitched just 9.1 innings in the majors this year. The Red Sox hope the 25-year-old can give them quality innings in relief, which have been hard to come by.
