Red Sox release Tyler Thornburg after injury-plagued career in Boston

Tyler Thornburg's career with the Boston Red Sox officially ended Wednesday when the team released him.

It's safe to say Thornburg's stint in Boston was a massive disappointment.

He was acquired by the Red Sox in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers in December of 2016. The Sox sent first baseman Travis Shaw to the Brewers, and he's played very well for Milwaukee with 63 home runs and 187 RBI in 2017 and 2018 combined. Other minor league players were involved in this trade, too.

Thornburg, at the time of the trade, looked like a great acquisition for the Red Sox. He was an excellent relief pitcher who tallied a 2.15 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP and 90 strikeouts over 67 innings during the 2016 season for Milwaukee.

Injuries prevented Thornburg from showing his talents in Boston. He missed the entire 2017 season due to shoulder surgery, and injuries plagued him in 2018 and 2019 as well. He pitched just 42 2/3 innings over 41 appearances for Boston.

Thornburg reportedly refused his minor league assignment earlier this week, which paved the way for Wednesday's decision by the Sox.
