The Boston Red Sox set a franchise record on Sunday, but not in the way they'd prefer.
In the second inning of Sunday's game vs. the Philadelphia Phillies, Rhys Hoskins drilled a home run off Rick Porcello to mark the 196th homer of the year let up by Boston. That's the most a Red Sox team has ever given up in a single season.
It's been a frustrating season for the Red Sox, to say the least, and poor pitching is the primary reason for that. But in fairness to the Sox staff, home run numbers are up across the board in 2019. On Wednesday, Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jonathan Villar clubbed MLB's record-setting 6,106th homer of the year. There still are three weeks remaining on the regular-season schedule.
On the bright side for the Red Sox, they're close to setting a positive home run mark. They need 13 homers to eclipse the 2003 club and set a new franchise single-season record.
