Red Sox set Opening Day roster, place Dustin Pedroia on injured list

For the second consecutive season, the Boston Red Sox will enter the regular season without Dustin Pedroia.

The Red Sox officially placed Pedroia (left knee inflammmation), Steve Pearce (left calf strain, retroactive to March 25) and Marco Hernandez (left shoulder joint repair) on the 10-day injured list Thursday.

In doing so, they finalized their 2019 Opening Day roster, which now looks like this entering Thursday's season opener against the Mariners in Seattle:

Pitchers (13): Matt Barnes, Ryan Brasier, Colten Brewer, Nathan Eovaldi, Heath Hembree, Brian Johnson, Rick Porcello, David Price, Eduardo Rodriguez, Chris Sale, Tyler Thornburg, Hector Velázquez, Brandon Workman

Catchers (2): Blake Swihart, Christian Vázquez

Infielders (6): Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, Brock Holt, Mitch Moreland, Eduardo Núñez, Sam Travis

Outfielders (4): Andrew Benintendi, Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., J.D. Martinez

There were reports that Pedroia could be ready for Game 1, but the Red Sox aren't taking any chances, even if the veteran second baseman would have it a different way.

Elsewhere, there are no surprises, as Boston was intent on carrying two catchers into Opening Day and outrighted Sandy Leon to Triple-A on Tuesday.

Travis also makes his first Opening Day roster as Moreland's backup with Pearce on the injured list.

A fun note about Bogaerts: He'll make his sixth consecutive Opening Day start as the Red Sox's shortstop Thursday, becoming just the seventh player in franchise history to record six or more Opening Day starts in a row and the first since Rick Burleson from 1975 to 1980.

First pitch at T-Mobile Park is set for 7:08 p.m. ET.
