Red Sox vs. Mets highlights: Boston's awful start to season continues in 8-3 loss

Share

FINAL SCORE: New York Mets 8, Boston Red Sox 3

IN BRIEF: The Red Sox lost their fourth consecutive game Tuesday night at Fenway Park as the starting pitching continues to be a huge problem.

Matt Hall took the mound for his Red Sox debut and lasted just 2 2/3 innings (51 pitches). He gave up three hits and three earned runs, while also tallying two walks and three strikeouts. Boston starters have now given up 15 earned runs, 17 hits and eight walks over 13 1/3 innings over the last four games. We knew starting pitching was going to be a weakness for this Red Sox team, but many people probably didn't imagine the rotation being this bad.

The Red Sox had a great chance to trim the Mets' 3-1 lead in the third inning with the bases loaded and no outs, but J.D. Martinez struck out and Rafael Devers hit into a rare 4-6-5-4 double play that ended the frame. Boston did manage to score one run on the unconventional double play, but it was still a huge missed opportunity to tack on some much-needed runs early in the game.

Jose Peraza (two hits), Rafael Devers (two hits), Kevin Pillar (three hits) and Kevin Plawecki (three hits) tallied all of Boston's 10 hits. The Red Sox lineup batted a disappointing 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, and the team also left six runners on base.

The Red Sox will now head to New York for their first road trip of the 2020 MLB season.
