The Boston Red Sox are still searching for their first win of 2021.
The Sox offense struggled again Saturday afternoon as the team lost 4-2 to the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.
Red Sox starter Tanner Houck pitched well enough to win, giving up six hits and two earned runs through five innings. He also struck out eight and walked only one.
Boston's lineup didn't provide Houck with much support, though. J.D. Martinez went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Marwin Gonzalez went 2-for-2. They accounted for five of Boston's seven hits in the game. Kiké Hernandez, Alex Verdugo, Rafael Devers and Franchy Cordero all went 0-for-4 at the plate.
The Red Sox had a great chance to tie the score or win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with runners on first and second and zero outs. Unfortunately for Boston, Cesar Valdez was able to shut the door for Baltimore and pick up the save.
Matt Harvey started for the Orioles but it was Adam Plutko who earned the win. Houck took the loss for Boston.
Here's a recap of the Red Sox loss.
FINAL SCORE: Orioles 4, Red Sox 2
RED SOX RECORD: 0-2
Maikel Franco put the Orioles on the board with a two-RBI single in the fourth inning.
