IN BRIEF: Alex Verdugo hit a solo home run, but the Red Sox couldn't get anything else going against Gerrit Cole on Friday night as Boston dropped Game 1 of its series in the Bronx. Sox opener Colten Brewer allowed four hits and three walks for two runs in 2.2 innings, and Ryan Brasier allowed three runs in relief including a bomb off the bat of Gary Sanchez.
Dylan Covey and Brandon Workman didn't fare any better as they allowed three and two runs respectively in the late innings.
Friday night's loss marked the Red Sox's fifth straight defeat.
