Red Sox will call up Darwinzon Hernandez to start Tuesday vs Rangers

The Red Sox are seemingly figuring out their pitching situation on the fly as they plan to call up Darwinzon Hernandez Tuesday so he can start later that night against the Rangers.

With Hernandez taking the mound Tuesday, it would mean that of the last six pitchers to start for the Red Sox, three of them are Hernandez, Ryan Weber and Josh Smith. Not exactly who you'd have in mind at the beginning of the season.

It's fair to wonder if Tuesday was supposed to be Nathan Eovaldi's game to return. The hard-throwing righty hasn't pitched since April 17th due to "loose bodies" in his elbow, and was unable to throw a scheduled bullpen session this past weekend due to bicep tendinitis.

It's unclear how this setback will affect Eovaldi moving forward, and it's clear the Red Sox need some stability on the back end of their rotation.

Hernandez has made one appearance for the Red Sox earlier this season where he struck out four Tigers hitters over 2.1 scoreless innings in relief. He is one of the Red Sox top pitching prospects, so we'll see what he's made of in extended time Tuesday.

First pitch for the Red Sox and Rangers is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EST at Fenway Park as the Sox try to avenge a brutal loss from Monday night.
