David Ortiz is likely headed back to Boston.

The Red Sox are working with Ortiz's family to fly him back to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for further medical treatment after he was shot in the Dominican Republic on Sunday night.

Though Ortiz's condition is still serious, Red Sox president/CEO Sam Kennedy said that he is stable enough to fly to Boston, hopefully as early as Monday evening.

“Right now, the club’s exclusive focus is on David’s health and well-being, and we're doing everything we can to get David back to Boston as soon as possible," said Kennedy.

ESPN's Enrique Rojas says Ortiz's father gave thanks to the medical team in the Dominican Republic Monday afternoon, and addressed the transport to Boston.

Here's an English translation of Rojas's tweet:

"Leo Ortiz: I want to thank this medical team for saving my son's life. If we go to Boston is because there are his personal doctors and his wife."

A lone gunman shot Ortiz in the lower back Sunday night at a bar in Santo Domingo, according to police. The former Sox slugger was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he had parts of his colon and intestines removed during a surgery that reportedly lasted six hours.

Ortiz's family says he's in stable condition, though, and is expected to make a full recovery. The Red Sox reportedly offered a private plane to transport Ortiz to the United States for additional treatment and said in a statement they are willing to supply "all available resources" to aid in his recovery.

The suspected gunman has been identified and arrested, according to police.

UPDATE (1:05 p.m. ET): A Red Sox plane has landed in the Dominican Republic and authorities have authorized permission for Ortiz to be transported to Boston "immediately," according to ESPN's Marly Rivera and Enrique Rojas.

Here's an English translation of Rojas's tweet:

"Red Sox aircraft is about to arrive in the Dominican Republic. Dominican doctors authorized (Ortiz's) transfer immediately once the aircraft is ready. 'The degree of stability that Big Papi presents makes it possible for him to travel immediately,' said Dr. Abel Gonzalez."

UPDATE (3:15 p.m. ET): Ortiz was still in the D.R. as of Monday afternoon but is expected to be flown to Boston shortly, according to The New York Times' James Wagner, who reported Ortiz spoke with his family this morning.

UPDATE (6:00 p.m. ET): Ortiz has left the hospital and is on his way to the airport, presumably to be flown back to Boston, according to the Boston Globe's Maria Cramer

UPDATE (10:25 p.m. ET): Ortiz has reportedly landed safely in Boston.
