Alex Verdugo, Xander Bogaerts earn 2020 AL MVP votes

Major League Baseball handed out its 2020 MVP awards on Thursday, and a pair of Boston Red Sox players received votes.

Outfielder Alex Verdugo finished 12th in American League MVP voting with one fifth-place vote and shortstop Xander Bogaerts finished 17th with a 10th-place vote. Verdugo hit .308 with six home runs and a .844 OPS during his first season in Boston. Bogaerts hit .300 with 11 homers and a .867 OPS.

E-Rod provides encouraging update on status for 2021 season

Chicago White Sox slugger Jose Abreu earned the 2020 AL MVP award with 21 first-place votes. The 33-year-old hit .317 with 19 homers, 60 RBI and a .987 OPS. Cleveland Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez finished second and New York Yankees infielder D.J. LeMahieu placed third.

Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves was named NL MVP after a season in which he hit .341 with 13 homers, 53 RBI and a 1.102 OPS. Former Red Sox star Mookie Betts and San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado rounded out the top three.
