David Ortiz was flown back to Boston on Monday night, and doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital wasted no time giving him additional medical treatment.
The former Boston Red Sox star underwent a second "exploratory" surgery in Boston late Monday night to treat the gunshot wound he suffered Sunday in the Dominican Republic, ESPN's Marly Rivera reported Tuesday.
According to Rivera, the surgery finished around 1 a.m. ET and Ortiz was declared in "stable condition," although he's still in intensive care and will be monitored closely over the next 24-48 hours.
Ortiz was shot in the lower back outside a bar in Santo Domingo on Sunday night and immediately taken to a local hospital, where he had a six-hour surgery to repair damage to his liver and intestines.
The Red Sox sent an air ambulance to the Dominican on Monday that brought Ortiz back to Boston just before 10:30 p.m. ET, per reports.

The latest reports suggest Ortiz still is expected to make a full recovery, but it sounds like that path to recovery may be a long one.
UPDATE (11:30 a.m. ET): The Red Sox issued a statement Tuesday on behalf of Ortiz's wife, Tiffany Ortiz, confirming he had a second surgery Monday night.

“David arrived at Massachusetts General Hospital last night and underwent a successful second surgery. He is stable, awake, and resting comfortably this morning in the ICU where he is expected to remain for the next several days.
“On behalf of me and my family, I want to thank John and Linda Henry, Tom Werner, Sam Kennedy and the Boston Red Sox for all that they are doing for David and our family, as well as Dr. Larry Ronan and the amazing staff at Massachusetts General Hospital.
“Lastly, I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support and love that we have received during this incredibly difficult time. We ask for privacy as David works towards recovery.”
