The New York Mets need a catcher, and one potential target for them ahead of Monday's 4 p.m. ET MLB trade deadline is Christian Vazquez of the Boston Red Sox.

MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported an update on the Mets' search for a catcher Monday afternoon, including a note about Vazquez.

The price to acquire Vazquez is "very high", according to SNY's Andy Martino.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal also tweeted an update regarding the Mets and Vazquez, calling the situation "overblown".

Vazquez is batting .254 with four home runs and 12 RBI in 30 games for the Red Sox this season. The 30-year-old catcher isn't a great hitter, but he's good defensively and has thrown out eight of 20 runners trying to steal in 2020.

The Mets certainly could use more depth at catcher, but pitching should be their top priority. Finding another capable starter is a better use of New York's trade assets.

From the Red Sox perspective, it makes sense to deal Vazquez if a team is willing to pay a decent price. Boston doesn't have to rush it, though, because Vazquez is still signed for another season. The Red Sox have made a pair of trades over the last two weeks and did well to acquire quality prospects in each one.
