WATCH: Christian Arroyo costs Red Sox two runs with brutal blunder

One play in Friday night's game vs. the New York Yankees perfectly summed up the Boston Red Sox' recent struggles.

The Red Sox trailed 5-2 in the third inning as the Yankees had runners on second and third with one out. Joey Gallo hit what should have been a routine flyout to right field, but what happened next was anything but routine.

Right fielder Christian Arroyo lost the ball in the Fenway Park lights, causing two runs to score. The Red Sox were able to throw out Gallo at home plate, but the damage was done.

Watch the sequence below:

In fairness to Arroyo, he isn't a right fielder. His 16 games in right field this season are the only times he's played the position in his baseball career. The 27-year-old typically plays the infield.

The bizarre play marked another low point in what's been a rough stretch for the Red Sox. They entered Friday's action with seven losses in their last 10 games. They're 9-19 against American League East opponents this season.
