Revolution sign left back Alexander Buttner to help on defense

Despite a disappointing loss to Atlanta United FC in the playoffs, the New England Revolution made a sneaky-good transaction Friday.

The Revolution announced that the club has signed Dutch left back Alexander Büttner for reinforcement in the backfield, and the 30-year-old has plenty of experience in the world's best leagues.

Through 12 professional seasons, Büttner has played for SBV Vitesse of Eredivisie, Manchester United of the English Premier League, FC Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Premier League, and R.S.C. Anderlecht of the Belgian Pro League.

Büttner has logged more than 20,000 minutes with 20 goals and 37 assists in more than 275 appearances through his career. His biggest accomplishments came while winning the EPL title with Manchester United in 2012-13, and the KNVB Cup title with Vitesse in the 2016-17 season.

Adding experience is something the Revs will likely enjoy throughout their next campaign, and head coach Bruce Arena was very pleased with the acquisition of Büttner.

“Alexander brings experience at the game's most competitive levels, and his skill and pedigree will make him an important asset for the club on and off the field,” Arena said, according to revolutionsoccer.net.

New England signed Büttner using Targeted Allocation Money, and he will be added to the roster following receipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate. He will occupy an international roster spot.

Ex-Revolution forward Juan Agudelo selected by Toronto FC in MLS re-entry draft

Ex-Revolution forward Juan Agudelo selected by Toronto FC in MLS re-entry draft

Former New England Revolution forward Juan Agudelo was selected by Toronto FC in stage two of the MLS re-entry draft Tuesday afternoon.

The 27-year-old's option for the 2020 season had been declined by the Revolution last month, making him eligible to be picked up by another club. Toronto now owns Agudelo's rights, and it's to be determined if he'll actually play for the team next season. If he does, he'll join the very talented Jozy Altidore and could combine for a nice one-two punch up front for Toronto.

The striker has 46 goals and 22 assists in 215 MLS regular-season appearances. He tallied three goals on 37 shots last season with the Revolution. He scored a career-high eight goals with New England in 2017.

He's being lauded for his hard work, determination, and sense of humor by New England fans across social media.

Agudelo was signed by the New York Red Bulls in 2010 to a homegrown player contract and remained with the club until 2012 before moving on to Chivas USA. He had been with the Revs since 2013.

On top of his MLS career, he's made 28 appearances for the US National Team.
