What Brian Hoyer texted Jacoby Brissett after Andrew Luck's retirement

When Andrew Luck made his surprising retirement announcement, Brian Hoyer sent well wishes to the Colts' new starting quarterback, Jacoby Brissett. Little did he know he'd soon be joining Brissett in Indianapolis.

Hoyer and Brissett got to know one another when they traveled to Churchill Downs earlier this year to take in the Kentucky Derby with Tom Brady and the regular cast of characters. When Luck decided to hang 'em up, Hoyer reached out to Brissett with a simple, encouraging message.

“I said ‘Hey man, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for, best of luck’. I had no idea that three weeks later I’d be here," Hoyer said according to Ben Volin of The Boston Globe.

Hoyer ended up being released by the Patriots during their final round of cuts, then signed by the Colts to become Brissett's backup shortly thereafter. The veteran QB should be a valuable presence in Indianapolis' QB room and bring a positive energy Brady admits he'll miss in New England.

As for Brissett, everything's looking good for the 26-year-old so far as he recently negotiated his own two-year, $30 million contract extension.

Reports: Former Patriots backup QB Brian Hoyer signing with the Colts

Reports: Former Patriots backup QB Brian Hoyer signing with the Colts

The Indianapolis Colts have added another former New England Patriots quarterback to their roster.

After losing Andrew Luck to retirement, the team has agreed to a three-year deal to have Brian Hoyer serve as their top backup. Hoyer was among the Patriots' final cuts and while the Patriots had interest in retaining him as a third quarterback, Hoyer elected to take the three-year deal worth up to $12 million with the Colts, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The Colts were rumored to be interested in Hoyer from the very beginning following his release. He is now locked in as a veteran backup option on the roster behind Jacoby Brissett. Brissett was a third-round pick by the Patriots in the 2016 NFL Draft and was traded to the Colts ahead of the 2017 season in exchange for Phillip Dorsett.

Hoyer's presence in Indy will give them a veteran presence in the quarterback room, something that they needed in the wake of Luck's surprising retirement. Hoyer has made 37 career starts and has a 16-21 record while throwing 48 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.

With the Colts, Hoyer will likely serve as the top backup to Brissett. He can mentor his young counterpart and also work with Chad Kelly, another young passer who may have had a chance to win the backup job had he not been suspended for the first two games of the season by the NFL.

While the Patriots may have liked to keep Hoyer, they should be fine without him. Jarrett Stidham flashed immense talent and upside during the preseason, and trusting the rookie fourth-round pick while opening up a roster spot for depth at another position seemed like a sensible move.

NFL Rumors: Colts very interested in released Patriots QB Brian Hoyer

NFL Rumors: Colts very interested in released Patriots QB Brian Hoyer

Could the Indianapolis Colts have two former New England Patriots quarterbacks on their roster to kick off the 2019 campaign? Apparently, it's possible.

According to ESPN's Dianna Russini, the Colts are "very interested" in Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer.

Hoyer, who entered the preseason as the Patriots' backup quarterback, was beaten for the backup job by rookie fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham. He was subsequently released by the Patriots among their final roster cuts.

The Colts have a massive need at the backup quarterback position in the wake of Andrew Luck's surprise retirement. While the team appears to have confidence in former Patriots third-round pick, Jacoby Brissett, as the starter, the team is looking for a veteran backup. Their current backup, Chad Kelly, lacks experience and is also suspended for the first two games of the season.

Hoyer would give the Colts a solid backup option and a seasoned veteran to help mentor Brissett and Kelly. He has made 37 career starts and sports a 16-21 record with 48 touchdowns and 30 picks during his career, so that type of experience could play well in the Colts' QB room.

That said, Hoyer reportedly has interest from six teams league-wide, per Sirius XM's Adam Caplan, and Jeff Howe of The Athletic is reporting that the Patriots retain interest in bringing him back. We'll see what ends up happening, but Hoyer shouldn't be out of work for very long.
