20 Under 25: A Revs veteran at 24, Diego Fagundez could face uncertain future

Still just 24, Diego Fagundez has accomplished a ton with the Revs in his MLS career. It’s fair to wonder how much longer that might last.

Born in Uruguay and raised in Leominster, Mass., Fagundez was the first homegrown player signed by the Revs back in 2010. At 23, Fagundez became the youngest player in MLS history to score 50 goals, but that achievement last season came amid confusion as to his future with the club.

Prior to the game in which Fagundez scored his 50th, Fagundez’ father/agent tweeted it could be the player’s last game with the Revs. It came to light that Fagundez was trying to find his way to Uruguay’s Nacional, but that the Revolution had declined Nacional’s offer for the player, who was still under contract.

So where does Fagundez, now in his ninth season, go from here? He’s reportedly under contract through next season, so if he can be an offensive spark (he’s down to two goals this season after scoring nine a year ago) to supplement the likes of Carles Gil and Gustavo Bou, he could help the Revs achieve the team success they’ve sought.
