Patriots will reportedly sign K Kai Forbath for showdown vs. Texans

The revolving door also known as the Patriots' kicker position is spinning once again.

Following Nick Folk's emergency appendectomy Thursday morning, New England is reportedly set to sign veteran Kai Forbath for Sunday night's showdown against the Texans. The news was first reported by ESPN's Field Yates.

Forbath will be the Patriots' fourth kicker of the season, following Stephen Gostkowski (Weeks 1-4), Mike Nugent (Weeks 5-8), and Folk (Weeks 9-12).

The 32-year-old Forbath has kicked for the Redskins, Saints, Vikings, and Jaguars over a seven-year NFL career. He hasn't been on an NFL roster since the end of last season, when he spent the last three weeks of the season with Jacksonville.

Overall, Forbath has converted on 85.7 percent of his field goal attempts and 94 percent of his PATs over his career.

This might end up being a one-week-only engagement for Forbath, as Folk's surgery was minimally invasive and has a short recovery time, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

New England will need to release a player from its 53-man roster to make room for Forbath.

From 1996 to 2018, the Patriots had remarkable stability at the kicking position, with Adam Vinatieri and Stephen Gostkowski combining to miss just nine games.

But 2019? That's been a different story.

The Patriots will need yet another kicker after Nick Folk had an emergency appendectomy Thursday morning. The news was first reported by CLNS Media's Mike Petraglia.

The good news is that it was reportedly a minimally invasive procedure, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The bad news is that New England will need to move on to its fourth kicker of the season.

Gostkowski struggled in the early going, missing five kicks in four games before landing on injured reserve. The team turned to Mike Nugent, but he missed three field goals and an extra point in four games.

Folk took over for New England in Week 9 and had gone 7-for-9 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points, only missing a couple of kicks in sloppy conditions against the Cowboys last week.

Former Patriots practice squad kicker wins NFC Special Teams award

As longime Boston sports TV personality Bob Lobel would say, "Why can't we get players like that?"

When looking at the NFL's Week 10 award-winners, one name stands out: Younghoe Koo.

The former Patriots practice squadder was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week in his first game after signing with the Atlanta Falcons. Koo was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals, all of which came from at least 30 yards out. He also was perfect on a pair of extra points, totaling 14 points and outscoring the Saints (9) all by himself.

After Stephen Gostkowski was placed on injured reserve in early October, the Patriots had signed Koo to the practice squad and Mike Nugent to the active roster.

But Koo lasted just 11 days on the practice squad, and Nugent lasted only four games with New England, missing three field goals and an extra point over that stretch. Nick Folk is now the Patriots kicker, and he was perfect on four kicks (two field goals and two extra points) in his lone game.

So while Folk might still be the answer, Koo — AKA the one that got away — is off to a great start to his NFL career.
