One month remains of the 2019 MLB season, and the Boston Red Sox are fighting tooth and nail for a playoff spot.

The defending World Series champions currently sit 5.5 games behind in the American League wild-card race after winning seven of their last 10. They'll look to gain more ground during this weekend's series vs. the Angels in Anaheim.

It wasn't long ago that many believed the Red Sox' playoff hopes were dashed. Now, they're in a position to make a run. Here's where Boston -- along with the rest of the league -- stands as we prepare for the final month of the regular season. . .

The 2019 MLB trade deadline has come and gone.

Some teams, such as the Astros, Indians, and Cubs, had themselves a busy week as they addressed some of their glaring needs. Others, such as the Red Sox, Yankees, and Dodgers, kept quiet despite the holes in their roster.

So, what kind of ripple effect did those moves — or lack-thereof — have on the rest of the league? Here’s how all 30 teams stack up after the deadline. . .

Take a 108-win season, a World Series title, and a roster that looked very similar to last year's, and it's no wonder that the Red Sox entered 2019 with high expectations.

And while Alex Cora's club still has championship aspirations, their road to October took a detour thanks to a 6-13 start in April — a far cry from their 17-2 start a year ago.

The American League features surprise division leaders like the Mariners, Twins, and Rays, and as teams find their footing, we will start to get an idea as to which clubs are for real — and which teams' success is just an illusion.

All that means that some early-season favorites have been knocked down a few pegs in our MLB Power Rankings, while others have made surprising leaps forward.
