NHL Power Rankings: Bruins tumble from top after losing streak

With just two weeks to go until Christmas, we're smack-dab in the middle of the holiday season, but it's going to be a blue, blue, blue Christmas for some NHL teams in a couple of weeks.

Let's start with the Red Wings, who are mired in a 12-game losing streak and have fallen a staggering 29 points behind the Atlantic Division-leading Bruins in a season that’s basically two months old. And the Devils are another Eastern Conference also-ran who sit far outside the playoff picture.

Over in the west, the Blackhawks and Kings are the cellar-dwellers, and unless they start to gain ground in the standings, some of these teams could already be thinking they'll be sellers in this season of giving with Christmas break still just about two weeks down the line.

Meanwhile at the other end of the standings, the Bruins had been flying high, but their first three-game losing streak since March has cost them their lofty perch at the top of the heap.

NHL Power Rankings: Supposed Atlantic Division powers struggling early

A season ago, the Atlantic Division featured three of the best teams in hockey, at least during the regular season: the Lightning, Bruins, and Maple Leafs.

But while the Bruins have shaken off a potential Stanley Cup Final hangover to pace the division this season, Tampa and Toronto have struggled out of the gate.

Neither team is above .500, and both find themselves out of the playoff picture through a quarter of the season.

While it's way too soon to tell if their struggles will continue, it's opened the door for some unexpected teams to make some waves in the standings.

NHL Power Rankings: Big shakeup in the Top 10 this week

Sure, the NHL's Stanley Cup Playoffs are months away, but it's never too soon to look ahead, right?

The competition for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference could be tight, as several teams have surged forward recently, including the Flyers, Panthers and Canadiens — all of which missed the playoffs a season ago.

The picture is also crowded out West, where not many teams have started to separate from the pack as of yet.

How are the Bruins stacking up after a four-game losing streak? And which teams are making leaps forward?
