Astros' Yordan Alvarez approaching Ted Williams in this historic stat for rookies

Astros rookie Yordan Alvarez has wasted no time giving opposing pitchers nightmares to start his professional career.

The 22-year-old left-fielder hit a solo home run in the sixth inning against the Brewers Monday afternoon, which was his 22nd of the season. It only took Alvarez 66 games to reach that mark.

He now posts a .317/.413/.671 slash line with 63 RBI to go along with the 22 homers, and according to Jim Passon, there are only six players in the history of baseball to hit 22 home runs with an on-base percentage over .400 as a rookie.

Those players include Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Albert Pujols, Al Rosen and Red Sox legend Ted Williams.

Williams finished the 1939 season hitting .325 with 31 home runs and 145 RBI. He then went on to become the greatest hitter that ever lived, so that's a pretty lofty standard to live up to. Still, Alvarez is in elite company and should be a thorn in the Red Sox side for years to come.

The Astros currently sit atop the AL West and are fighting for the top seed in the American League Playoffs with the Yankees. We'll undoubtedly get to witness Alvarez under the bright lights of the playoffs, so we'll see how he handles the big stage.

Here's the latest ridiculous stat from the breakout season of Red Sox 3B Rafael Devers

Here's the latest ridiculous stat from the breakout season of Red Sox 3B Rafael Devers

The eye-popping Rafael Devers' stats just keep on coming.

His ninth-inning home run Wednesday night at Coors Field in the Red Sox' 7-4 victory over the Rockies also marked his 200th career RBI.

That's 200 RBI at the age of 22. He's only the fourth player in Red Sox history to accomplish that. (h/t @ESPNStatsinfo)

The others? Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr, and Tony Conigliaro.

Devers broke out of an 0-for-15 slide in a big way with a 3-for-5 night that included his 28th homer and a triple to give him 80 extra-base hits on the season. Despite the recent slide, the third baseman still leads the majors in hits with 174 and is hitting .326.

Only one other Red Sox player had 80 or more extra-base hits at 22. It was Williams in his rookie year of 1939 and again in 1940. (h/t @BostonSportsInf)

Next up will be the 30-homer, 50-double mark (Devers leads MLB with 48 two-baggers). With teammate Xander Bogaerts hitting his 30th homer Wednesday and also closing in on 50 doubles with 46, they'll be the first teammates ever to accomplish the feat in the same season. (h/t @SoxNotes)

Rafael Devers, Ted Williams the only Red Sox players ever to reach this historic mark

Rafael Devers, Ted Williams the only Red Sox players ever to reach this historic mark

Rafael Devers' 2019 season has been nothing short of incredible.

It seems nearly every day the 22-year-old is making Red Sox history in one way or another, and that again is the case following Wednesday's game vs. the Indians. Devers smacked his 25th home run of the season in Cleveland, one day after going 6-for-6 with four doubles (which never has been done in MLB history).

That 25th homer makes him the only Red Sox player not named Ted Williams (1939) to have a 40-double, 25-HR season before age 23. Not bad company to be in. . .

Devers also is the youngest player since "Teddy Ballgame" to notch 30 or more RBI in a single month. The red-hot third baseman accomplished that feat in July of this year.

It's been a season Sox fans likely will want to put in their rear-view mirrors, but Devers' breakout campaign at least gives them a reason for optimism about the future.
