The U.S. Open is returning to The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., and two of the most popular and successful golfers of this generation could be amongst the field.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson both filed entries to compete in the tournament, which begins Thursday, June 16.

Golfers intending to compete at the U.S. Open had until Wednesday to submit their registration.ย

Woods played in the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club last week. It was his first PGA Tour event since he suffered injuries from a car crash in April of 2021.

The sight of Woods at one of golf's most prestigious courses was great for the sport. However, the 15-time major champion struggled to compete for another green jacket. Despite making the cut, Woods finished 13-over-par.

Woods last played in the U.S. Open in 2020. He failed to make the cut. Woods has won this tournament three times, with his most recent triumph coming in 2008 when he won in a playoff despite battling a torn ACL.

Mickelson did not compete at the Masters earlier this month -- his first absence at Augusta since 1994. His comments about an upstart Saudi-backed pro golf league have created some controversy. It's not known when Mickelson will return to the PGA Tour, but judging from his actions this week, he at least hopes to play at the U.S. Open.

Mickelson has six major championship victories, but the U.S. Open is the only one of the four he hasn't won.

The Country Club in Brookline is one of the oldest courses in the nation. It last played host to the U.S. Open in 1988 and, of course, was the site of the United States' incredible comeback to win the 1999 Ryder Cup.
