Scheffler leads Masters after Round 3, Smith closes gap to three strokes

Scottie Scheffler is yet to hit the brakes but he might have some competition from Cameron Smith heading into the final day at Augusta National.

Scheffler jumped out to a five-stroke lead in Round 2 of the tournament and carried that momentum into Saturday. He recorded four birdies in the opening nine holes to extend his lead to seven over Charl Schwartzel, Shane Lowry and Smith who all sat at 4-under at the midway point.

His good fortune seemed to run out on the back half of the course, bogeying holes 12, 14 and 15 and 18. Meanwhile, Smith quietly closed the gap to three shots with six birdies on the day to end 6-under. The Australian is looking to improve on his 2020 performance when he finished tied for second with Sungjae Im.

Speaking of Im, the South Korean started out the day with a double bogey followed by back-to-back bogeys at the fifth and sixth holes. He recovered with a strong back half of the course to finish 4-under and secured third place heading into the final day of competition.

Lowry and Schwartzel round out the top-5 after Round 3, followed closely by Justin Thomas and Corey Conners as the seven players to finish the day under par.

Further down the leaderboard, Tiger Woods struggled to make up ground, recording five bogeys and two double bogeys through 18 holes. Woods finished 6-over 78, his worst performance in Masters history. The five-time Masters champion is currently in a four-way tie for 41st with Russell Henley, Daniel Berger and Jon Rahm, who was the favorite to win it all heading into the tournament.
