Another take on Garza's future

Apparently Matt Garza's situation is drawing the attention of the national baseball writers.

We saw FOXSports' Ken Rosenthal's take on how the Cubs are going to try to ink Matt Garza to a contract extension and CBSSports' Jon Heyman concurs.

Heyman said the Cubs are looking to extend Garza before entertaining any trade options, and also points to Jeff Samardzija's emergence as a big reason.

If the Cubs were to trade Garza, Heyman believes top pitching prospects would be demanded in return, which makes a lot of sense. He also suggests that Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer's high asking price for Garza indicates a desire to keep the 28-year-old righty around long-term.

If the Cubs were to sign Garza to an extension -- his contract is up after the 2013 season -- Heyman ballparks a figure around 80 million over five years.

Heyman also hears from one competing National League executive that the Cubs should try to trade veteran starter Ryan Dempster instead of Garza, especially now that the 35-year-old is off to an incredibly hot start (1.02 ERA, 0.85 WHIP). Though, given the 14 million contract attached to Dempster, the Cubs would need to throw in some money or else they wouldn't get much in return.
