2020 NFL Draft: QB class just got stronger for the Bears

The Bears' 2020 offseason will be filled with questions at quarterback. Mitch Trubisky's regression this season, combined with an overstocked free-agent class of starting-quality veterans and a 2020 NFL draft with several first-round worthy prospects, will present GM Ryan Pace with a very difficult decision.

If Pace signs a veteran or drafts a rookie in the second round, the message to Trubisky will be clear. The patience the Bears have shown in the former first-round pick's development will have officially run out and a full-blown quarterback competition will be underway.

Chicago is without a first-round pick in 2020 because of the trade for Khalil Mack on the eve of the 2018 regular season. Pace parted ways with the Bears' 2019 and 2020 first-rounders, among other picks, to land the generational pass rusher. Chicago also received the Raiders' second-round pick this year, which will potentially give Pace two top-50 picks at his disposal.

He can use those selections to trade back into the first round if a quarterback he likes slips the way we've seen in the past (Lamar Jackson's slide in 2018 serving as the most recent example), but it's more likely he'll sit back and wait for a quarterback to fall to Round 2 if, in fact, the team is going to draft one.

With the way the 2020 NFL Draft prospect pool is shaking out, there's a good chance a quality prospect will still be on the board for Pace.

Washington's Jacob Eason declared for the draft on Thursday, while Utah State's Jordan Love already announced his decision to turn pro a few weeks earlier. Combined with senior prospects Joe Burrow (LSU),  Justin Herbert (Oregon), and Jalen Hurts (Oklahoma), there are at least five highly thought of prospects now in the mix.

This doesn't include Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa and Georgia's Jake Fromm, either. Tagovailoa would be a sure-fire first-round pick while Fromm will have a varying degree of grades. Some will like him as a top-32 guy while others will say he's more of a Day 2 prospect.

Trubisky's roller coaster ride of a season will come to an end Sunday against the Vikings. If he puts up another stinker like he had in Week 16 against the Chiefs, you can safely move quarterback to the top (or at least near the top) of the Bears' draft needs.
