Bears among favorites to land new QB via trade

While the Bears still have at least one game left to play this season, we already know what the biggest question will be for the team heading into 2021. That is, who will play quarterback in Chicago going forward?

Ryan Pace declined Mitchell Trubisky’s fifth-year option before this season began, so even though he’s played well enough to earn another contract, there’s no guarantee the two sides come to an agreement. Meanwhile, Nick Foles didn’t play well enough during his short stint as the starter to quell doubts that he’s anything more than a really good backup, who happens to play amazing in the Super Bowl. So who else if not those two?

According to PointsBet, there’s a decent chance the Bears take a shot with another Eagles QB. On their Colorado site (interestingly this bet isn’t available on the Illinois site), they list the odds for Carson Wentz to play for the Bears at +200. Those are the second-shortest odds out of all the teams in the NFL, behind only the Indianapolis Colts. That scenario makes sense, as it would be a reunion for Wentz and head coach Frank Reich who was the Eagles offensive coordinator from 2016-17.

Right now the Colts have Philip Rivers under center, but Rivers is set to become a free agent next year. According to NFL.com, Rivers is still weighing two options once this season ends: retiring or returning to Indianapolis.

As for Wentz, he’s still under contract in Philadelphia through 2024, but with an out in 2022, according to Spotrac.com. However, the Eagles benched Wentz in favor of Jalen Hurts midway through the season. According to an AP report, Wentz still hasn’t spoken to Eagles officials about his future with the team, and may request a trade.
