Bears pick up 5th-year option on OLB Leonard Floyd

Leonard Floyd will be back with the Bears in 2020.

ESPN's Field Yates first reported the team picked up Floyd's fifth-year option and the Bears have since made it official:

It's not at all surprising, given that Bears GM Ryan Pace confirmed they'd be doing that during his end-of-year press conference:

"I think with Leonard, that's a fair question," Pace said. "Our plan is to pick up that fifth-year option. He played well and we're happy where he's at. I feel like Leonard is still doing this (indicating upward trajectory) and I think you felt that as the season was going on and so that's something we're planning on doing."

Floyd's option comes with a BIG ol' pay raise. He'll make a hair north of $2 million this upcoming season, which then that jumps to $13 million in 2020. The move does create an interesting situation for Chicago down the road, however, as they now project to be significantly over the salary cap in 2020.

Floyd's played in 38 games over three seasons since being drafted out of Georgia with the 9th overall pick in 2016. Injuries and consistency have dogged his career thus far, though he played probably the best football of his career in the 2nd half last season. All 5 of his sacks came on Week 9 or after, including one in their Wild Card loss to Philadelphia.
