Bears promote rookie TE Jesper Horsted to active roster

The Bears' search for production at tight end will take an interesting turn over the final six games of the regular season as the team announced it's promoted Princeton alum Jesper Horsted from the practice squad to the active roster.

With Trey Burton on injured reserve and Adam Shaheen deeply rooted in Matt Nagy's doghouse, there could be a legitimate opportunity for Horsted to contribute as a pass-catcher. He was Princeton's all-time leading receiver, after all.

Horsted was signed by the Bears as an undrafted free agent shortly after the 2019 NFL draft concluded. He was one of the stars of the East-West Shrine Game, a college all-star game comprised of second-tier NFL draft prospects, and appeared well on his way to hearing his name called in April. That momentum stalled after he wasn't invited to the 2019 NFL Combine and, ultimately, the unknown over whether he'd successfully make the switch from Ivy League wide receiver to NFL tight end kept him waiting.

Horsted ended his Princeton career as the school's all-time leader in receptions (196) and touchdowns catches (28). He instantly becomes Chicago's most appealing target at the position and can take hold of an even bigger role entering 2020 if he finishes the season strong.
