Bears waive Bradley Sowell, sign DT Abdullah Anderson from practice squad

The Bradley Sowell experiment is over barely after it started.

The Bears waived the offensive lineman-turned-tight end ahead of Monday’s game at Washington. In his place, the Bears signed defensive tackle Abdullah Anderson from the practice squad.

The 6-foot-7 Sowell joined the Bears ahead of the 2017 season as an offensive tackle. Last year, as a backup lineman, he had a two-yard touchdown reception on a trick play against the Rams. He lined up as a tight end on several plays last year.

This offseason, he converted into a tight end full-time, losing weight and changing numbers. During the preseason, coach Matt Nagy preached patience with Sowell as he made the transition. Sowell made the team out of the preseason as the fourth tight end on the roster, but the Bears are not sticking with four tight ends.

Sowell was a starter at tight end in the opener against Green Bay with Trey Burton out injured. In two games, Sowell was on the field for 11 offensive snaps and also played on special teams. He was targeted on zero plays.

Anderson moving up from the practice squad makes sense with Bilal Nichols out with a broken hand.

It’s also worth noting that the Bears did not sign an extra kicker. That’s likely a good sign for Eddy Pineiro’s availability on Monday night. Pineiro had been listed as questionable with a leg injury.
