Why Briggs, Brown don't buy Nagy learning to coach better

No matter who you are, no matter how talented or hard working, a six-game losing streak is awfully humbling. In the Bears’ case, each and every player had to look in the mirror to ask themselves if they were doing everything they could to help the team win. Included in that was head coach Matt Nagy, but on Football Aftershow the crew was divided in thinking whether or not that self-reflection made an impact in the gameplan.

“The one thing I find interesting is maybe you’re listening to a coach talk about, even he’s learning how to be a better head coach, and what wins football games,” Olin Kreutz said after Sunday’s win against the Texans. “The first thing he said is, ‘You’ve got to be able to run the ball and pass protect.’ Well the next thing you have to do then is build your team that way.”

While Kreutz charged the Bears to reshape the roster to fit Nagy’s epiphany, the other guys weren’t convinced by Nagy’s stated rededication to the run game in the first place.

“I’m not buying this,” said Alex Brown. “I’m not. We’re talking about the last two teams you played, they’re bottom-five in the league on defense. Both of them. One you lost to, and your defense gave up 30 points. Now all of a sudden you want me to believe that you figured it out. You figured it out now… I don’t buy that.

“Do it for three weeks, because you lost for six weeks.”

Unfortunately for Brown, the Vikings won’t present much more of a challenge for the Bears next week. After Week 14’s early slate of games, they’ve surrendered the fourth-most passing touchdowns in the league this season (26) and the sixth-most passing yards (3,336).

“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I do agree with you,” Lance Briggs said. “I do agree with you, man. You’ve got to look at it this way too. He said, there are things that are changing, but without that 10-yard average, Montgomery doesn’t get 100 yards. He got that off of that big run. I mean 11 carries. If you had commit to him— which is something that we’ve been saying— maybe you score more than the (36) points that you scored today.”

“Let’s see it next week against Minnesota,” Brown said. “Let’s see it next week.”
