Complete details of Jimmy Graham’s contract with the Bears

The complete details of Jimmy Graham's somewhat surprising contract with the Chicago Bears have leaked. It's still a head-scratcher.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, Graham's two-year, $16 million deal breaks down as follows:

Signing bonus: $6 million
2020: $3M base salary, fully guaranteed
2021: $6.9M base salary, $100K workout bonus

The contract includes incentives and, probably the most shocking element, a no-trade clause. Yes, the Bears agreed to a no-trade clause with Graham.

It's not like there would be a trade market for Graham anyway. There probably wasn't much of a free-agent market to begin with. It feels a lot like the Bears bid against themselves. Maybe we'll learn later on that there was a cluster of teams clamoring for Graham at TE1. I really don't think that's the case, especially after a 2019 season that seemed like a precursor to his retirement announcement.

Graham is guaranteed a roster spot with the Bears in 2020, and there's a good chance he'll play out this deal in Chicago if he has anything resembling a pulse this season.

Even with Graham in place, the Bears still have work to do at tight end. They need a legitimate pass-catcher who can stress the second level of opposing defenses on a weekly basis. At this point, the only avenue left to address that need is in the 2020 NFL Draft, where players like Notre Dame's Cole Kmet, Purdue's Brycen Hopkins and Washington's Hunter Bryant are viable candidates on Day 2.
