Trubisky happy to find place to develop in Buffalo

Updated, 5:00 p.m.: After video came out providing further context for Trubisky’s quotes, some of the copy has been changed to reflect that additional context.

Mitchell Trubisky is feeling the love in Buffalo, a love that the former Bears quarterback apparently did not feel throughout the free agency process.

Trubisky mentioned that initially he wanted to find a team where he might have a shot to compete for a starting role in free agency. But when that opportunity didn’t appear, he settled for the “next best thing: where I can continue to develop.” As it turns out, that place was Buffalo, not Chicago.

Looking back, we now know that the pairing between Trubisky and Matt Nagy was not a match made in heaven, but now it seems like the two were always destined for a divorce.

The Bears drafted Trubisky in 2017 when John Fox was still the head coach and Nagy was grooming Patrick Mahomes to be a superstar. But part of Nagy’s charge when Ryan Pace hired him was to develop Trubisky into a franchise quarterback. Obviously, that didn’t work out, even though the team went 29-21 with Trubisky at the helm.

All that is in the past now though, and Trubisky’s having fun on the gridiron again with the newfound support from the Bills.

Even though his career in Chicago didn’t pan out the way he would have liked, Trubisky reportedly said he’s still looking forward to visiting Soldier Field later this month when the Bills and Bears square off for a preseason game. Since it’s the second preseason game, Trubisky will likely see plenty of playing time as well.

Will Trubisky get the last laugh going head-to-head against shiny new Bears QB Justin Fields? Or will Nagy and Pace get vindication (or at least as much vindication as one can get in an exhibition game) as they unleash Fields on the rest of the league?
