Report: Lovie Smith to be next Texans head coach

Former Bears head coach Lovie Smith is getting another shot to be a head coach in the NFL. According to multiple reports, the Texans are finalizing a deal with Smith to take over in Houston.

Smith was defensive coordinator/associate head coach on David Culley's Texans staff last season. Of course, Smith is best known in Chicago for his time leading the Bears from 2004-2012. Over his tenure the Bears went 81-63 in the regular season, and 3-3 in the postseason. Smith’s Bears career was highlighted by a Super Bowl appearance following the 2006 season, but the team made an additional NFC Championship appearance in 2010.

He was fired following a 10-6 season in 2012, and the Bears have only had one winning season since then. After taking one year away from football, Smith became the Buccaneers head coach, but he was fired after going 2-14 and 6-11 in two seasons.

After Tampa, Smith moved to the college level to coach at the University of Illinois, but he didn’t find much success there either. Smith coached the Fighting Illini from 2016-2020, with the team going 17-39 and losing their only bowl game appearance.

Smith has 28 years of coaching experience in the NFL and NCAA combined.
